The same law running the universe is wreaking havoc with your life.

“One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” — Frederick Nietzsche

Have you ever cleaned out your garage?

You take out some boxes, move things around, sort out what you’re going to toss and what you’ll keep.

As you unpack, things you haven’t thought about in years begin to resurface – pictures of your grandparents, your hair in your high school yearbook – old memories suddenly demanding your attention.

And before you know it, you’re totally distracted, and your garage looks a thousand times messier and more chaotic than when you started.

That’s just how cleaning goes, but it also happens to be a law of life…

Sometimes, things have to get worse before they get better.

Gap Insight: Similar to your garage, your body, mind, relationships, business, and your life all follow one important law: The Law of Entropy.

The Law of Entropy

It’s the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics – the Law of Entropy – which dictates that the universe’s overall disorder, or randomness, always increases.

It’s a universal constant, and it’s not just about your garage.

Think of your hair in the morning, an unattended garden gathering weeds, the expanding pile of unwashed dishes in your sink, or the tangled cord of your headphones.

Entropy.

In your life, the law of entropy shows up as:

  • An un-nurtured relationship that turns sour.
  • A lack of clear communication to your team that leads to a misunderstanding.
  • Failing health when you don’t exercise or eat well enough.
  • A buildup of hurt, grief, dissatisfaction, or resentment that begins to drain your zest for life.

Which brings us to the other reality of entropy:

Things will always move towards chaos unless a considerable amount of energy is applied to restore order.

That’s the rub. It takes effort to reverse entropy.

Specifically, it takes focused ATTENTION and INTENTION.

Gap Insight: Think of entropy as the momentum of chaos. To reverse course, an equal and opposite force needs to be applied. That force is YOU.

The Law of Transformation

When the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing, you’ll shift. Until then, most people stay where they are.

It’s the pain/pleasure principle. Cleaning up any mess you’ve made – including the one in your garage – requires conscious intention, time, discipline and sometimes, a tremendous amount of work.

Which is why so many people fail to escape the chaos, and entropy, of their lives.

Most of us want transformation without disrupting our sense of comfort.

Or, more specifically:

  • We want healthier bodies without changing our habits.
  • We want better relationships without engaging in difficult conversations.
  • We want more enriching emotional lives without feeling uncomfortable emotions.
  • We want a more meaningful career without having to face uncertainty.

Generally speaking, we want to clean our garages without doing the cleaning.

Therefore, change requires three things:

1. Insight

You need to see any problem or challenge you wish to change clearly as it is. Not worse or better, but exactly as it is.

“I’m unhappy.” “I’m unhealthy.” “I’m not leading my team decisively.” “My garage is an absolute disaster.”

2. Determination

The next step is to determine exactly what you want and why it’s crucial to achieve it.

“I want to create more honest, clear communication with my spouse (or my employees, friends, etc.) because without it, there’s distrust, miscommunication, and disconnection, which all lead to misery.”

3. Courage

Change requires the courage to sit in discomfort for some amount of time. You can’t get in marathon shape without suffering through a few training miles.

You need the courage to endure whatever comes your way knowing you’ll eventually get through it.

This is where most people get stuck.

It helps to remember that “the mess” you’ve made as you unpack your life isn’t a sign that you’re failing—it’s often the clearest sign that you’re finally making progress.

Gap Insight: Expecting change without discomfort is like expecting a butterfly without the struggle of a chrysalis.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning out your garage is never easy, much like reversing the entropy of your life can take time and conscious effort.

And sometimes, things might feel worse before they get better.

There might be temporary pain after ending a relationship, uncertainty after a difficult conversation, cravings while ending an addiction, muscle soreness from a new workout.

Yet, with insight, determination, and courage, you begin to take the steps towards building something that’s even better than it was before.

After all, you can’t build a new, more beautiful castle without tearing down parts of the old one.

But as you create a new vision, stack one brick on top of the other, and resign yourself to see it through, you’ll build the castle you always desired.

That’s how you close the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Yours in health and transformation, David
